Set in Stone [Amethyst Cat]
Title: Set in Stone
Author: heleentje
Character(s)/Pairing: Amethyst Cat
Rating: T
Notes:
- Johan's old deck is a Walkure-deck that I created for a possible future fic.
- In my headcanon, the age of the Gem Beasts follows the colors of the rainbow, with Ruby as the oldest and Amethyst (and later Rainbow Dragon) as the youngest.
- The story can be found here at fanfiction.net
Warnings: Vague spoilers for seasons three and four, one very brief mention of violence.

1.       The first time she saw Johan – really saw him, not just felt him from inside a briefcase – she thought they’d made a mistake. This boy, barely more than a child, with clothes that didn’t quite fit him yet and a stance that betrayed how nervous he really was, couldn’t be the one they’d been waiting for. But then Sapphire Pegasus moved aside and she finally got to look him in the eyes, and she knew: he’d be amazing.

2.       She’d never expected to like Norway; there was too much snow and too much water for her to feel comfortable. That's why it came as a surprise that after only a few weeks in Johan’s company, she called it home.

3.       One of the first duels she ever took part in was against a French girl who insisted on being called la violette. She knew how irritated Johan was even before he summoned her to the field; the girl was obnoxious and loud, with no respect whatsoever for either her cards or her opponents. It made her ashamed to be associated with the same color as this ‘violet’. (And if she used a little more force than necessary to end the duel, that was no one’s business but her own.)

4.       One day, not long after they’d found Johan, Johan showed them his old deck. The spirits in it had gone to sleep until they were needed again, and she didn’t need to look at his face to know that Johan dearly missed them.

5.       “Rainbow Bridge Bifröst?” Cobalt Eagle asked, looking at the card Johan showed them. “Some things never change, do they?”

Johan laughed softly and tucked the card behind Walkure Erste. Amethyst Cat frowned. It wasn’t that some things never changed, she decided. It was that destiny liked to be prepared.

6.       Before Duel Academia, before Juudai and Rainbow Dragon and Yubel, Johan would sometimes talk about them as if they were all siblings, related by blood. He’d call her Kattja and say she had pink hair because their family was full of people with weird hair colors. No one ever pointed out just how genetically impossible it would be.

7.       She liked Juudai; he made Johan happy and would protect him if it came down to it. Yet a small, selfish part deep inside her couldn’t help but hate him every time she saw him; if Johan had never met him, he would have been safe, and the nightmares would have stayed away.

8.       The first time Johan woke up shivering and drenched in sweat, Amethyst Cat wished they were back in one of those other dimensions, where she had a solid form and could cuddle up against him.

9.       She cursed that wish when Johan finally told them that those other dimensions were exactly what he’d been dreaming about. She’d hoped he’d never have to experience what they’d gone through again.

10.   Amethyst Cat understood perfectly well what had driven Yubel. She would even admit that she would’ve done the same if she had been in Yubel’s place, and that perhaps, just perhaps, they were more similar than she would have liked.

11.   However, that didn’t change her resolve: she would not forgive Yubel. Even after Juudai had assured them all that Yubel wasn’t evil, and that she wouldn’t hurt Johan, she still couldn’t bring herself to trust the person who’d hurt them all so much.

12.   On her chest, right next to the large gemstone and invisible to anyone who didn’t know it was there, ran a long, thin scar. Only two beings in the entire universe knew how it had come into existence: Amethyst Cat, the one who had to bear it, and Yubel, the one who had inflicted it.

13.   For his sixteenth birthday, one of Johan’s classmates gave him a pair of pink pajamas decorated with purple cats. He never wore them, but Amethyst knew they were always in his wardrobe, neatly ironed and carefully folded.

14.   She couldn’t remember their lives before their cards were made, and despite Rainbow Dragon’s claims to the contrary, she wasn’t even sure they’d actually existed as anything other than a gem stone.

15.   Rainbow Dragon was younger than her, just like she was younger than Ruby, but when she looked into his eyes she saw the knowledge of centuries.

16.   Of course, that didn’t stop her from calling him her little brother.

17.   When they made it back to Norway after the few months they’d spent at Duel Academia, she thought they could finally relax. She knew Johan missed Juudai, but as long as they were all safe and far away from different worlds and psychotic monsters, it felt like a small price to pay.

18.   It wasn’t to be, of course. The moment Johan heard that Juudai was in trouble, he called a taxi to the airport. It was utterly frustrating, but she hadn’t expected anything less from Johan.

19.   She was one of the youngest Gem Beasts - a fact Topaz Tiger never hesitated to remind her of -  but she still felt like an older sister. It was a role she fell into easily, and when Ruby curled up against her after a particularly hard day, or Johan asked her for her opinion on something he’d heard, she always felt a stab of protective pride: these were her siblings, and no one would ever hurt them.

20.   Not keeping that promise was her deepest regret.

two thumbs up!
Oh wow, I have to say, you really pulled it off! I love this like you don't even know. Gem Beasts For The Win!

I like how you gave (developed?) Amethyst cat a personality; also, the family theme (with "Kattja" and the pink cat-print pajamas and stuff), so sweet.
;v;
And I like the age set-up you made for them. xD Rainbow Dragon being the youngest is really, really adorable, haha.

Re: two thumbs up!
Thanks you! There's very little to go on to give the Gem Beasts a personality, but they do leave a few hints, so I extrapolated from there. Amethyst is show to be protective of Johan (and by extension probably the rest of her family as well). And I absolutely love writing family fluff for them. They look like such an awesome family to have ^^

The age set-up was basically me going 'hah hah imagine if Ruby is actually the olde- hey wait I can justify that!' There's something really unexpected about the idea (and even though Ruby's the oldest in most of my fics, she still very much fulfills the role of baby sister)

Re: two thumbs up!
You're welcome! :3 Little to go on yeah, but it leaves a lot of room for imagination~. :D Haha, aaaw, yeah, gotta love the family~. I'd love to have a dragon for a brother! 8U;

Haha, awesome! It's a really good, interesting idea though, I never that about it. :o Yeaaaah, Ruby's too tiny to be much of a big sister anyway. 8D; /bricked
Also read your reply to cheeky, Norse mythology heck yeah! o/\o I know nothing about it, but it's really interesting to read other people talk about it!

Re: two thumbs up!
Good thing they usually don't have a physical form, though. I don't know where you'd get a house big enough to hide a dragon :p

Haha, I'm kind of a mythology freak: mostly Greek but I can work with Egyptian, Norse and Chinese mythology too. GX in general has a lot of alchemy shout-outs, but it's not too shabby with mythology either, so I wouldn't put it past the writers to sneak some obscure reference in there :D
Your Amphibious Acquaintance: enlightenedpijsan on September 23rd, 2010 06:13 am (UTC)
Haha! Yeah that's true. xD Johan would have to hide him in an abandoned Wal-Mart or a canyon or something if Rainbow Dragon had a physical form. :P That's what I would do anyway. .u.

Pffft I wish I were a more active mythology freak. I get all giddy when I read other people pointing out the easter eggs in GX, one of the reasons I love it <3. Never really bother to do research myself though. :C
Also, you mention you're mostly a geek about Greek mythology, is that what got you into it*(*mythology, that is)?
Heleentjeheleentje on September 23rd, 2010 10:21 am (UTC)
And I don't know if you're gonna be able to find those in Scandinavia :D Even then, a huge dragon flying around would draw some attention on the satellite pictures.

GX is mainly alchemy and tarot, which I sadly don't know all that much about, but there are some great essays by people who know more than me. In the meantime, I get to amuse myself with the mythology bits. And yeah, Greek mythology was what got me into it. More specifically, my name: when I was about 6 I asked where my name came from and my parents told me it came from Helen of Troy, so I asked for the entire story. It grew from there. (Ironically, Helen is one of my least favorite mythological characters). I 'graduated' to other mythologies when I started noticing similar themes between stories in different cultures.

This is absolutely brilliant! You write the Gem Beast very well and to do this from Amethyst Cat's point of view completely; it was a very good read! Actually, your a talented writer and I enjoy reading your fics!

Walkure? *Googles it* Oh Valkyrie, that is a very interesting choice. *Stops and thinks about it* A very awesome choice, I am rather intrigued about the interaction he would have had and can't wait to read this future fic. I take it Norse Mythology will play a part?
Personally I like to think his old deck as his manga deck, but I don't play the game so I go with sort-of-cannon. (As in it may not be cannon in the anime but hey manga is close enough) Though after the Gem Beasts it is a little sad to think of him and bugs.
And that is a very bittersweet explanation of what happened to his old deck. Completely plausible, but sad. And if you were to write or expand on what happened after the Other World, I would be very happy to read it. ^^

I must say, I do like your headcannon.

I wish I had some constructive criticism to give, but I didn't notice anything and I'm not the best editor. ^^; So I have only love and praise to offer.

Aww, thanks! <3 The Gem Beasts are some of my favorite characters (mostly because I sort of envy Johan for having a great family like that).

Norse mythology... Will play a role, but only to the extent that the deck is based on it. The way I see the fic now, there will be very little supernatural elements involved (nothing beyond the standard 'I see monster spirits', I believe).
Mmm, this is still very basic, but what I can say is that the fic will take place a couple of years down the line, when Johan is in his early twenties, and that the Gem Beast deck gets stolen. That's why he needs the Walkure deck. Not all of those monsters are entirely happy to see him again.
I came up with the early outlines for this deck before I heard about the bug deck in the manga, and I must admit that I'm not very fond of the manga (I have trouble seeing the characters as alternate versions of the anime cast). But as for why it's a Walkure deck... Basically it's because of Rainbow Bridge- Bifröst. I was rereading some old mythology books one day, it struck me that Bifröst (a rainbow bridge in Norse mythology that connects the realm of gods with that of humans) and Johan (a Scandinavian boy with a rainbow-themed deck who wants to connect humans and spirits) were really quite similar. It went from there.

Ahem, I got carried away there. Sorry for the tl;dr! ^^;

I was wondering how much could be written about Amethyst Cat O_O It honestly never would have occurred to me to write from her POV. Nicely done. I enjoy random little details like what kind of pajamas a person has stashed away in their drawers. Also I like the way you had certain facts directly related to each other that were still separate pieces of information.
Heleentjeheleentje on September 22nd, 2010 08:23 am (UTC)
Thanks! She's a lot of fun, really. Amethyst is one of my favorite characters to write, for various reasons. A couple of the related facts just wrote themselves and I'm liking some of the stories behind them. I'll probably write out at least one of those.

Wow, this is impressive! I'm amazed that you managed to write so many things about Amethyst Cat. Sometimes it's easier when you get to play around and make things up because there's not a lot to go on in canon, but sometimes it makes things a lot more difficult. I think you did a great job here. I like how solicitous and motherly you made Amethyst Cat. I also really liked the comparison between her and Yubel--I wouldn't have made that connection myself, but it was very apt and very creative. All in all, great piece!
Heleentjeheleentje on October 3rd, 2010 03:24 pm (UTC)
Thanks! I like writing about Amethyst Cat and Yubel, because they strike me as two persons who would be great friends if they could actually stand the sight of each other. They -in my headcanon, at least- are rather similar in personality. If they have someone to protect, they'll move heaven and earth for that person. In canon their interests conflicted and that's what made them clash. (Honestly, I shudder to think what would happen in Yubel and Amethyst Cat, or by extension the Gem Beasts, ever team up to fight for a common goal. They'd take over the universe before the end of the day :p)
